Lost little comic nerd...
Alright, so if I were going to start reading Teen Titans, where do I start. As new to this comic collecting thing, I find myself lost and wondering where to go with these storylines that have been going on forever and ever. If anyone can offer any guidance, it would be much appreciated! |

This Title Has Not Yet Been Released!
Do you like Vampires? How about seances? Time traveling ghosts? I knew you did and I have something for you! Dark Shadows was a gothic soap opera that ran 5 days a week from 1966-1971. It starred a 300 hundred year old, time displaced, reluctant vampire named Barnabas Collins who did his best to keep this ancestors safe from the constant supernatural menaces that haunt their ancient house and its estates. Dark Shadows had many marketing tie-ins including a daily newspaper comic strip as well as board games. In 1968 Gold Key comics launched a Dark Shadows comic book telling new stories about the Collins family and Barnabas the vampire. Starring a slightly trimmed down cast from the soap opera and existing slightly out of continuity, the comic actually lasted 5 years after the cancellation of the show. Now Hermes Press is collecting these comics into hardcover editions similar to the DC or Dark Horse archives and the first is up for pre-order over at Amazon. It looks like each of the 5 volumes will hold 7 issues plus supplemental material with the first volume scheduled to come out in March. Hermes Press is also responsible for the Buck Rogers' comic strip reprints which recently became available. I own about 10 of these Dark Shadows comics and I will admit that they are of variable quality. Some of the stories, not art, are as good as any EC horror comics one might find; creative and macabre. The art is workman like, at times it can be quite photo accurate to the actors portrayed, but mostly it seeks to tell the story simply and with as little flash as possible. Unfortunately, on occasion, it can look slapdash. With all that said, I do encourage picking up the first collection (based on promised contents as I haven't gotten my copy yet). The subject matter and historical "cool" factor are high enough that a $30 pre-order will more likely than not be worth it. Stephen reorganizes all of his comics, Part the Last
The world conspired to keep me from finishing the organization of the aforementioned comics for all of two weeks or, to look at it another way, the universe decided that my guest bedroom looked better with stacks of x-books scattered across every surface. Whichever you prefer is fine by me. Here's the break skinny: I have a ton of x-books relative to the rest of the collection. I'm not empressith though, I have very few runs that weren't purchased after the fact, years later out of .50 bins. 22 issues of Uncanny X-Men scattered over 30 years; 29 issues of the first volume of X-Force (129 issues in that volume); the first 16 issues of X-Statix and the Deadgirl mini-series a smattering of x-factor, x-men unlimited, x-babies, and x-men. For someone who is a self proclaimed x-brat in his origins, I have surprisingly few comics that I actually bought in the early 90's. Of course when you one can't drive to the comic store, has no job (teenager not deadbeat), and doesn't subscribe to any books, it's hard t collect. Also my parent's basement at the time would flood every so often thus removing one or two books from the collection each time. I lost some cool shit, shit of which I now have no memories. Almost 1000 individual books, 5 long boxes. Heavy focus on: Hellboy, BPRD, X-books, MODOK and Bi-Beast appearances, The Defenders, Buckaroo Bonzai, Kolchak the Nightstalker, Sandman Mystery Theater, Doom Patrol, Man-Thing, Judge Dredd related titles, She-Hulk, and West Coast Avengers. -Stephen End Trans. Comic News and links A poorly titled Marvel project to celebrate female creators, artists, writers, and characters is in the works. It's called............ Girl Comics...ummm, ta da? Apparently this was chosen over the weaker options of On the Rag Comics and In the Kitchen and Barefoot Comics. What the goddamn fuck Marvel? I look forward to the comic, but the title is shit. At least Marvel Divas sounded like a project, not some vague descriptor. *** On a less newsworthy, but more fun note is this story from Complex.com which offers up the 50 Best Comic Covers of 2009: linkI especially like #41, 31, 24, 18, and 13. As few comics as I bought this year compared to the average comic collector, I own something like 11 of these 50 covers. Odd. EDIT: Scott Pilgrim movie news. The cast in costume...Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim...:sigh: Michael Cera.Marvel and Disney synergy art. It will blow your ever farking mind.-Stephen |

How many of these have you read?
io9 today posted a list of 10 of the Decade's Best SF Comics. Not the 10 best, 10 of the best. Personally I've read volumes 1 and 2 of Scott Pilgrim and We3, own but have not yet read Black Hole, and intend to read the Morrison All-Star Superman and Y the Last Man. I'm almost completely uninformed when it comes to the others, which means they're way obscure/small press. I normally thrive on those titles, but then again I was out of comics entirely until 4-5 years ago at the beginning of the decade. -Stephen |

Read Legion of 3 Worlds. Geoff Johns MIGHT just be redeemed in my eyes. Connor coming back = a little sketchy but I'm glad he's back. Bart coming back, not an angsty 20-something = amazing. Legionnarries everywhere = what I live for. Any other thoughts? |

The Fantastic 4 get their come-uppance
It will change your life. If you don't find this funny, die in a fire. My favorite is the modified racism/watermelon joke. It clearly horrifies some people, but completely fits with the Henny Youngman style and matches Doom's own odd sense of racial/nationalistic superiority. Also, I dig transgressive comedy. -Stephen |

I bring you Victoriana
I have very little interest in core DC characters, but I do have many soft and doughy spots for steampunk and variance bits of Victoriana. And thus I felt I should draw attention to one man's labor of love. Steampunk Justice LeagueSteampunk Legion of DoomMy personal tastes lean towards his Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd, The Flash ( JODHPURS!), and Hawkgirl (Goggles!) Whadya think, teen-gang? -Stephen |

Hello, and I'm a little confused
Ok. So, I just wanted to introduce myself here. I've only been collecting comics for about a year now, so I know I'm fairly new to the genre, and there is still a lot of I haven't read, but I do love to discuss them, and I guess, find some help when I get lost. Like now....I'm reading the Blackest Night storyline, and I really just don't understand why Kyle Rayner did what he did? I don't want to throw any actually spoilers in here so I won't go into much detail. I'll just say that all I really know about the Lanterns comes from what I'm learning from this story line. |

The First Of Many Millar Bashing Posts
So I don't know how many of you spend time on Comic Book Resources, from the 3 or 4 people who actually post and comment here, I should maybe just email you and ask you, but what they, I'm at work and feeling stupid, so here's another post that no one will read, or care enough about to comment on, and that's probably my fault, I was raised Roman Catholic, so blame myself for everything and feel bad all the time. Anyways. There was a post on Millar/Niven's newest project for ICON, "Nemesis". Here's the promo pic: It's come out that Millar is describing the story as "What if the Joker was Batman?", this coming hot on the heels of his popular, "What if a kid in the real world was a superhero?" and following his other popular stories such as "What if Eminem had a bisexual father?" and "What if Army guyz had real powerz for real you guys?". Nevermind that Mark Waid, who I'm coming to realize is actually probably a better writer pound for pound, punch for punch than Millar, just put out his "What if Superman was evil?" comic, "Irredeemable" this past year and it's bloody brilliant. But, the point I'm trying to make in this entry at least, is that, Really? Is this all were doing these days? Stories that can be summed up in the most simple of basic stupid obvious questions? Is this all we've ever been doing? Maybe I'm being short sighted, maybe it's always been like this, I guess you could sum up "The Dark Knight Returns", "What if Batman retired and then didn't?" but that doesn't seem to cover it at all. "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen"- What if all the literary characters were alive for real and made a super team that operated out of London and had to-, see, not so easy. So I propose we search for the next great Millar here in zomgcomics! Here you can post all your brilliant ideas for new edgy dangerous Millar esque stories! I'll start. -What if The Kingpin was Daredevil? -What if Professor X was Magneto? -What if Cyclops was Wolverine? -What if Elijah Snow was a member of the four? -What if Reed Richards was Dr. Doom? -What if Captain America was the Red Skull? (OOPS. Millar just nailed that one in Ultimate Avengers) -l- |
